What is acid reflux?
Acid reflux is a digestive problem in which acid within the stomach travels back up through the esophagus, irritating the lining of the throat and leading to a burning or gnawing feeling in the chest and throat. Symptoms of acid reflux may get worse after eating a large meal or when lying down.
What are the signs of acid reflux?
The most common symptom is burning chest pain that usually occurs right after a meal, especially if it’s a big meal, since the stomach has to work overtime to break down all the food.
Those with acid reflux may also experience,
- A bitter taste in their mouth as a result of the acid. If this problem occurs during the night, it’s important that you see our Brooklyn ENT doctor for care. There are simple acid-reducing medications such as H2 blockers that can help you manage your symptoms so that you aren’t waking up in the middle of the night with pain or discomfort.
- You may also notice changes in your voice, as well. As the esophagus continues to come in contact with stomach acid, this can irritate and even damage vocal cords. As a result, someone with long-term and untreated acid reflux may deal with hoarseness or a scratchy voice.
- Sore throats aren’t just for those with the flu. If you have acid reflux, then you too may also be dealing with a sore throat. If you find that your sore throat occurs after eating, then chances are good that these symptoms are the result of heartburn. If a sore throat is accompanied by a stuffy nose or sneezing, then a cold or infection is most likely to blame.
